The link between Infection Control and Indoor Air Quality explained

The importance of good quality air in Hospital and Care environments is very important when it comes to infection control, allergy trigger control, respiratory problems, immune deficiencies to name a few and the control of bacteria and viruses. Add vulnerable very young and aged people and the air quality is even more important.

Not all about HYGIENE!

In a Care environment where we would have vulnerable elderly and very young patients who are ill and have immune deficiencies then we are going to see an increase in Health effects like allergic reactions, respiratory disorders, hypersensitivity diseases and infectious diseases. Add to this the human occupants who shed viruses and bacteria and their own infections into the air and onto surfaces, a syringe is test squirted into the air before an injection is given to a patient and even more questionable nano molecules are introduced into the air. The MRSA super hospital bug may already be on surfaces with other infectious viruses and bacteria and yet heavy cleaning has made little difference. It is not all about Hygiene, As we improve our cleaning standards you have to ask, why do infectious diseases continue to increase?

How do we improve Infection Control in Care Environments?

We know the importance of the Hygiene aspect but this is only one part of the equation. Without a doubt improving indoor air quality is also vitally important using new technologies that are cost effective and ongoing. Incorporating new plasma and EMF technologies for both surface and air treatments adds significantly to control of airborne and surface bacteria, viruses and microbes.

Savings can surpass Costs

This type of professional approach will contribute substantial savings over time for the Health Services by reducing the spread of infectious diseases, reducing recovery time, making more beds available and saving lives. Not only that but sick leave by staff will also be reduced as this type of approach incorporating these advanced air technologies also reduce the spread of influenza and similar illnesses. Generally there is no extra staff costs associated with the operation of this type of air purification system.

Air and Water quality are the basic most important elements of human survival. If their quality is poor there is a high risk of becoming ill. Europe has been slow to understand how vital good quality air is to human survival. When environmental bodies and organisations discuss air quality they are usually referring to outdoor air.

In countries like the U.S.A. and Canada Indoor Air is a 20 year old issue. In this part of the world we never really noticed until recently. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tell us that most of us spend up to 90% of our time indoors and that indoor air is on average 2 to 5 times worse than outdoor air and in extreme cases can be up to 100 times worse. Is it not time that we started to seriously worry about the air we breathe?

In a hospital environment air quality is even more important for individuals with allergies, hay fever, chronic sinusitis, rhinitis, emphysema, asthma, atopic dermatitis, immune deficiencies etc. That is before we even mention bacteria and viruses, mould and fungi and other microbials and all that contribute to infectious diseases that use air as their carrier mechanism.

Minimum Standards for this type of Air Purification equipment.

All air equipment for Hospital and Care environments should use systems approved by the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). Products like these that prevent disease etc fall into Class 2 as Medical Devices. Therefore, they all should be Class 2 FDA Approved Medical Devices. They should be clinically tested for performance and have high bacterial and virus kill rates in excess of 90%. They should have 100% efficiency at 0.3 micron size and have a CFM (cubic feet per minute) in excess of 100 at low speed.

The Healthway range distributed by Pure Air Technologies is one of the few manufacturers that exceed all these criteria. They can also offer customised solutions with Wall mounted units, Ceiling mounted units and Free Standing units. They can be built in or added later.
